The basic standards behind CCI

CCI is based on the following international standards:

EN ISO 12006-2:2015 Building construction – Organization of information about construction works – Part 2: Framework for classification
EN IEC 81346-1:2009 Industrial systems, installations and equipment and industrial products – Structuring principles and reference designations – Part 1: Basic rules
EN IEC 81346-2:2019 Industrial systems, installations and equipment and industrial products – Structuring principles and reference designations – Part 2: Classification of objects and codes for classes
ISO 81346-12:2018 Industrial systems, installations and equipment and industrial products – Structuring principles and reference designations – Part 12: Construction works and building services

As suggested by the title, ISO 12006-2 gives the framework for classification of the built environment. As for the classes, ISO 81356-12 provides codes and classes for functional systems and technical systems, while IEC 81346-2 provides codes and classes for objects and spaces. IEC 81346-1 defines the rules for using the classification for reference designations.

Rules for table modifications

All the CCI Core tables are based on the standards described above, currently without modifications.

Changes and additions to CCI Core can be made based on needs from users.
The following rules shall apply:
– changes shall be decided in consensus within the CCI Technical committee
– additions can be based on needs expressed by only one party, e.g. a specific country
– to exclude the possibility of duplicate classes, coding of subsequent additions must leave room for previous one party additions.

Updating

The coalition will keep and maintain the core in a spreadsheet file in the initial phase. Each party can obtain a copy of the core classification, which they can store in a database to make available translations and national additions. Each national entity is expected to develop and maintain a web UI and an API with services aimed at the national and/or international market. However, this is not an obligation, and everybody’s free to choose what kind of service they provide or use.

On a regular schedule, the coalition will consider and approve alterations to the core, which can be forwarded to the national entities for incorporation in the national classifications. The general operating procedures and principles of the coalition are outlined in the CCIC Charter and Bylaws. Further technical details regarding storage, distribution and updating of the CCI will be agreed jointly by the coalition Trustees.
